What is a Brand Narrative?

I have some good news and bad news.

The bad news is that you aren’t the hero of your brand narrative. Your customer is.

Companies are so inclined to put on the cape and mask, hop on their batmobile, kick some villain and save the day, they overlook the interests of their customers and make it all about themselves.

“We’ve been the number air conditioning company in southern California since 1989.”

“We make the world’s best coffee.”

“We’re the number one car dealership across the state.”

It’s all we we we or me me me. This verbiage disconnects your customers in an instant.

They could care less about your business other than thinking how you can help them and make their life better.

Now the good news is that you can fix this. Let’s define build your story of your story.

Simply ask yourself the follow:

  • Who are you?
  • Who are my customers?
  • What do you get to be known for?
  • Why do you exist?
  • Why should people care about you? i.e. what benefits do you have for my customers.

In order for you to become a guide for your customers, understand why you’re helping your customers in the first place. By doing so, you’ll take the first step in order for your customers to begin and take action.

Brand Narrative Takeaway:

“Why is the world better when your company came along?”

Remember, don’t let your narrative focus on yourself make it about them. The sooner you realize this the sooner you’re going to help them.

In the next episode of this two part series, I’ll be covering the pain point and solutions for your hero of your story.
